I’m not a huge fan of Halloween, but I am a big fan of songs about satan, witches, werewolves, mummies, and other spooky things.

WARNING: This Playlist may make you want to creep around in the dark and participate in general tomfoolery.  Now give me some candy!

I really wanted to make an all black metal album focusing on the war between the Viking black metal from Norway and  Death black metal from Sweden, but decided that songs about Odin and church burning were really for a different playlist.  P.S. if you play this record backwards there is a nice recipe for chocolate zucchini bread.

Ryan’s Playlist IV – Favorite Road Trip Songs

In Rate My Playlist on September 30, 2009 at 6:28 pm

On the eve of a big road trip this weekend (and after a much needed break to focus on other areas of our lives), we are back with a new playlist for you!  We decided on the theme of our Favorite Road Trip songs a couple months ago when aspirations of a Labour Day vacation were still fresh on the mind…boy were we off.

We pushed forward anyways and here you go; a couple songs about hitting the open road and a handful of others that help me get to the final destination…no matter how many KM’s away.

Justin’s Playlist III – Favorite Cover Songs

In Rate My Playlist on August 23, 2009 at 4:40 pm

These are some of my favorite songs re-imagined  by  my favorite artists.  Some songs are done in completely new ways, like Brazilian Seu Jorge’s(aka Knockout Ned from City of God) acoustic cover of Bowie’s, “Starman.” Other songs are loving homages to the original, like Edmontonian Krystle Dos Santos‘ cover of Nina Simone’s, “Ain’t Got No.” I had no idea some songs even existed until contemporary artists covered them: Nirvana’s cover of Bowie’s “The Man who sold the world.”

Of course, how could a list of cover songs not include a cover of Cohen’s Hallelujah? Rufus Wainwright, K.D. Lang, and of course Jeff Buckley all do great versions, but, I decided to include a less popular Cohen song: “Famous Blue Raincoat,” as covered by Hayden.

Ryan’s Playlist III – Favorite Cover Songs

In Rate My Playlist on August 23, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Well after an extremely humbling (and undeserved) defeat in week 2, I am ambitious to switch things up for this week.  Gone are the days of sappy love ballads and crowd pleasers…this weeks theme is our favorite cover songs!  I didn’t really have any focus coming in to this week but I knew there was a few amazing songs that I wanted to include (Dead Flowers, Tyrone, Don’t Look Back) and some cool bands and artists (Fishbone, Peter Tosh, MIA).

In the end, what you get is everything from heroine rock (who doesn’t love the Big Lebowski?) to party anthems (Jump on It) to one of the best Queen covers of all time…in all it’s angry glory.  If Paul Anka isn’t your cup of tea or you are easily offended by Nirvana covers, don’t skip to the end because My Morning Jacket’s cover at the end of it all is a real treat.  Enjoy…or don’t, I’m just here for the free food!

Ryan’s Playlist II – Alternative First Dance Songs

In Rate My Playlist on July 28, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Well, as wedding season has  sprung within my family and friends, Justin and I have decided to go with the theme of the summer and offer up a special little treat.  Everyone who has been to a wedding can attest that the “first dance” between Man and Wife is both cheesy and awkward for all party attendees. Instead of bringing presents or money to celebrate your specialist of days, this is for you…alternative options to Josh Groban or Eric Clapton for your first dances.  We’re not saying any of you have to use these songs…but it would sure make our day a little more special.

If I ever get married (which is doubtful),  most of these songs will be featured on my wedding playlist…including the anti-love song by Joy Division.  I definitely didn’t go as alternative as I could have, but I think this playlist has a good mix of sappy and different.  I don’t think i can go as far as to say it is the perfect mix, but i think it is close.  You get a little classic, a little nu-classic, a little blues-classic, and a little anti-love love song classic!  Enjoy!
